American Federation of Martial Arts (AFMA)
The purpose of the American Federation of Martial Arts is to popularize and develop the spirit of Karate in the proper direction by prompting and strengthening friendly relations among its member organizations and their members in all Countries, and to achieve the advantage of World unification of all Empty Hand Styles in the Martial Arts, thereby contributing to the perfection of the human character. AFMA was created in 1979 by Hanshi Ennever and presently has over 29,000 active members.

Amateur Athletic Union (AAU)

The Amateur Athletic Union is the premier governing body of amateur sports in the USA . Through the National AAU Karate Program, competitors are given an arena to showcase and compete against other traditional martial artists from around the country. Sportsmanship and proper conduct are a major part of the AAU system. All coaches must be AAU and ASEP certified. Certification requires a stringent process of seminars, courses, and tests. Competitors are expected to follow a strict code of conduct, as are parents, coaches, and judges.
